Whilst practicing as an independent homebirth midwife I have been fortunate to meet many interesting families. As a founding member of Canadian Midwifery I went to homebirths by the lakes as well as suburbia. I travelled in the height of the summer as well as through ice storms and blizzard conditions to get to my clients homes.

I recall one birth I attended; my collegue and I were both driven by our husbands. Mary’s son came along too as she was still breastfeeding I remember the beautiful drive through pine trees with snow still on the ground. The home was on the edge of a wood. The woman was surrounded by her friends and partner. Mary’s husband Brian recalls hearing the baby crying as the moon was eclipsed, a magnificent moment.

At another home birth the partner was a Buddhist and when I called my backup midwife to attend, again in a small town. I forgot to mention that their support person was a Buddhist monk 6ft plus dressed in orange robes, sitting in the corner, her face was a picture when she walked in the room.

I feel honoured to have worked with some native Canadians. I remember one birth where the partner was a sharman and to welcome the baby he put on the grand entry music in a pow wow and dressed in his yellow jacket trimmed with ribbons.

I love looking through my collection of photos and letters and enjoy keeping in touch with clients, getting the latest news update on their families.

Wherever I have attended home births in different parts of the world from Brighton to North America, there is one thing that never changes, the joy of greeting the baby into the family.
